Issue-279 [vol1]
Title- True Lies
Writer/Art- John Bryne
Summary:
Doctor Doom is dead. His loyal Doombots execute the contingency plan left by
their master. Calling Kristoff to a secret lab, the Doombots plug Kristoff into
the Remembrancer. The device installs all of Doom's memories into the mind of
young Kristoff. He relives all of the moments that have made Doom who he is. We
see the death of Doom's father, his school years, the accident, and his time
with the monks. When at last we see his earliest exploits, Kristoff orders the
machine stopped. Forgetting who he is, the boy dons his own armor and proceeds
to execute a plan to destroy the Fantastic Four. Reenacting his plan to launch
the Baxter Building into space, this time around Kristoff does it without the
aid of Namor. Thus, the Baxter Building is launched into space and then
destroyed. The FF mange to survive only because of Sue's invisible force field.
With a bit of trickery the FF along with Wyatt Wingfoot and little Franklin
manage to return to Earth and to the source of the attack, Latveria. A short
battle through the castle results in the FF making a startling discovery. The
Doom now ruling Latveria is in fact the young boy Kristoff.

Notes:
- Doombots claim that their minds are such perfect imitations of Doom,
they could fool a telepath.
- Doom has never intended for Latveria to be ruled by one of his Doombots
in the event of his death.
- Modern retelling (1985) of Doom's origin. See Fantastic Four #5,
Fantastic Four Annual #2, Books of Doom.
- She-Hulk is able to rip open Kristoff's exo-suit.
Creator Comments:
John Byrne left the Fantastic Four title
before resolving Kristoff's storyline. He briefly comments on how he
would have continued the story on his message board:
John Byrne (Writer/Artist): "I intended
Doom to return to Latvaria and absolutely FREAK OUT when he discovered
what his robots had done to Kristoff. Basically -- he'd need a
whole lot of new robots by the time he calmed down. And then he would
devote a whole lot of time and energy to restoring Kristoff. (I had not
decided if he would be successful. Part of my brain wanted him to
realize he needed the help of the other smartest guy on the planet --
and there was no way he could ever go there!)" -

Comments:
A momentous issue. Readers who were there for the first time
Doom tried to kill the FF by shooting their building into space will
feel nostalgic. My only question is how can Kristoff be only a couple
of years older than Franklin? But then again, the year is 2003 and
Franklin
hasn't even hit his teens, when he should be around 20 years old. John Byrne
continues his expansive plans with Doctor Doom by using the character of
Kristoff which he created back in FF246. Since this is the first time Kristoff
dons his Doom armor, this issue kicks off what became a new era in Doom's
history. Although dead for now, Doom would later return and have to deal with
his errant child. The highlight of this arc is in issue 278 when we are treated
to a retelling of Doom's origin, Byrne style. Interesting to note is that I
believe he is the first to actually show the damage Doom suffered after his
accident at the university. I think it looks bad. I have a few scars myself and
I don't think it vain to want to hide them or think they make you look ugly.
However its possible that this is the source of the theory that perhaps Doom's
face wasn't so disfigured after all. Its still a matter of opinion. This is the
issue that sets up the plots for all future Doom appearances for years to come.
