Title- Secrets of Fire & Iron

Issue- 1

Writer- Ed Brubaker

Art- Javier Pulido, Marcos Martin, Mike Perkins & Frank D'Armata

Summary:

Rumors that the Red Skull is searching for a device that could turn the tide of the war send Captain America and Bucky with Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos to the small village of Eisendorf. There they find him excavating the ruins of an ancient castle ruled by a eccentric Baron 500 years ago. Ultimately Captain America infiltrates his base and battle the Skull and a giant robot dug up from under the castle. The Captain defeats the robot and the Skull retreats. Years later, in the present day, the possessed Alex Lukin under direction from the Red Skull excavates the very same castle. When Lukin presses the Skull for the importance of this pursuit, the Skull advises him to inspect the sketch of the Baron...it is Doctor Doom!

Notes:

  • Eisendorf, roughly translated means "Iron Village."

  • Based on the image sketched on the map of Eisendorf, Doctor Doom apparently ruled the town as the Baron of Castle Eisen 500 years in the past.

  • According to local records, the Baron was "an inventor, he came from another land...he created farming machinery and even devices that could fly...the valley thrived under his protection for a generation..."

  • This plot thread is continued in Captain America #23

Comments:

A one page scene which will probably mark the beginning of Doom's most interesting adventure in years. And all thanks to Ed "Books of Doom" Brubaker. I can't think of any else I would want steering the character. Given that Doom's doesn't really appear, and its nothing more than setting the seed for a future plot, I can't really recommend it for Doom fans. However if like me you're a fan of WWII yarns, Nick Fury, and/or Captain America, definitely pick it up. Bottom Line: N/A
