Summary:

Bucky and co. learn that one of the sleeper agents was used to attack Doctor Doom. Since the weapon used wasn't sufficient to kill him, the team believes someone is trying to manipulate Doom rather than actually kill him (yet). The team continues to try and track down the persons responsible for awakening the sleepers. Though they have learned that Ivan Kragoff is involved, Lucia von Bardas' involvement remains unknown to them. Elsewhere, von Bardas awakens the third and last of the sleeper agents and reveal to him the next phase of her plan which involves using a Doombot.

Issue - 3

Writer - Ed Brubaker

Summary:

After learning that a Doombot was bought on the black market, Buck and co. begin to suspect that someone wants to frame Doom for some coordinated disaster. Nick Fury offers Lucia von Bardas as suspect no.1 because she disappeared from custody during Norman Osborn reign over HAMMER. So while Fury and Jasper Sitwell attempt to trace von Bardas through Ivan Kragoff, Bucky and Black Widow have to break into the Latverian embassy and warn Doom. Meanwhile, von Bardas' Doombot has received its orders to attack the UN assembly.

Issue - 4

Writer - Ed Brubaker

Art - Butch Guice

Summary:

After revealing to Doom that one of his Doombots has been repurposed by Lucia von Bardas, he agrees to help Bucky. Doom tracks the Doombot to the UN building where it has entered the Latverian embassy there with one of the sleeper agents. Together they plan to stage a fake assassination attempt at the assembly. With Doom's aid, Bucky enters the UN building. While Doom battles the reprogrammed Doombot, Bucky pursues the sleeper agent. The two fight until the agent is mortally wounded. Before he dies, he hints that von Bardas already got what she needed from the Doombot.

Notes:

  • Collected in Winter Soldier, Vol. 1: The Longest Winter

Issue - 5

Writer - Ed Brubaker

Art - Butch Guice

Summary:

Doom reveals that his Doombots are programmed with the launch codes for his nuclear weapons arsenal. This means that Lucia von Bardas now has access to Doom's arsenal. With Doom's assistance, Bucky and Black Widow teleport to the missile silo. While Doom and Black Widow battle Lucia and the gorillas, Bucky pursues the sleeper agent. Bucky tries unsuccessfully to reason with him. In the end, he is forced to kill him. Doom agrees to dismantle his facility and hands over the defeated Lucia in exchange for her silence. Doom also agrees to keep quiet about Bucky still being alive.

Notes:

  • Kristoff doesn't know about Doom's secret missile silo. Doom has them pointed at him, implying that Doom doesn't entirely trust Kristoff being in charge of Latveria.

  • Gorillas with guns are a challenge worthy of Doom!

  • Collected in Winter Soldier, Vol. 1: The Longest Winter

Comments:

Ed Brubaker writing Doom. Guice drawing all sorts of Steranko-esque stuff. Lucia von Bardas alive. Gorilla's with machine guns. What more can you ask for? In the hands of the master (Brubaker) Doom is nothing less than spectacular. I enjoyed the Bucky and Doom 'team-up'. They should do this again some time. Likewise, I was so happy to see Nick Fury and Doom in the same room together. Two of my favorites. And two characters who I think have been in need of a confrontation. Bottom Line: * * * * * out of 5
