THE LATVERIAN FLAG

One of the earliest visualizations of the Latverian flag is in Fantastic Four #85 [1]. It is characterized by the use of the eagle image which is very common. The eagle design has managed to permeate throughout the iterations of the flag design. In FF#85 the eagle is black set against a yellow background standing atop a scepter. The presence of the scepter in the design would seem to emphasize the monarchy as the ruling government of the land. The eagle on scepter can be faintly made out in the Marvel Graphic Novel, Triumph and Torment.

A different flag is presented in Hulk #144 [1] which maintains the black eagle but changes the background to red. Notable is the absence of the scepter, perhaps subtly indicating the shift in Doom's government from monarchy to absolute dictatorship.

Years later, on the duplicate Earth sometimes called 'Planet Doom' another flag was presented. Totally different from what has come before, it can be argued that this flag is not meant to embody Latveria but perhaps Planet Doom. However the flag has been used several times since then, indicating that it may in fact represent the nation of Latveria and all its "territories" and not just Doom's presence on Planet Doom. This flag has appeared in Doom: The Emperor Returns, Secret War #5, and Captain America #23. A variation of the flag was first seen in Books of Doom #6 and later in Penance - Relentless #4

The Marvel Atlas provided an official Latverian Flag. This flag, as far as I know, has not been used before (and so far, not since). | |
