Thor

First Appearance: Journey into Mystery #83

Doom first encountered Thor in the 1940's during World War Two. Using the name 'Hans', Doom acted as the lab assistant to Doctor Olsen, a Nazi scientist under instructions from Adolf Hitler himself, was to find a way to bring Thor into the 20th century. Doom added his expertise to Olsen's work and managed to successfully summon Thor. Hitler then managed to convince Thor that he was fighting a great evil and to aid him in his cause. Convinced by Hitler's persuasive argument, Thor undertook a mission to assassinate Josef Stalin. This brought Thor into conflict with the wartime super-hero team, the Invaders. Ultimately Doom was instrumental in revealing to Thor the truth about Hitler's intentions and also stopped Hitler from unleashing an army of trolls which the Norse god had been fighting previous to being summoned. The Thunder God would not meet Thor again until years later when Doom kidnapped Doctor Donald Blake, Thor's then human host, in order to reconstruct his face. This inadvertently brought Doom into direct conflict with Thor. The two would again battle one another with Thor leading the armies of Asgard against him after he had stolen the cosmic power of Galactus.

Long after that encounter, Doom would attempt a similar ploy with Thor's own power during his exile and war with Kristoff. Doom sent one of his mechanical creations, a Time-Bot, to capture Thor's hammer in order to harness its energies. With it, he was able to enter his once home and defeat Kristoff. The victory however was only momentary as the hammer was freed from Doom's clutches with the aid of Hercules and the She-Hulk. Over the proceeding years, Doom and Thor would encounter one another peripherally during larger events such as when both became unwilling participants in the Secret Wars on Battleworld. Later the two would also become a part of the forces assembled to combat Thanos during the Infinity Gauntlet event. On this occasion however it was opposite Erik Masterson, a once human host for Thor now actually given the Thunder God's mantle. Again, Doom and Thor were among those gathered to battle another global threat, Onslaught. The battle ended with the 'death' of the majority of Earth's super-powered heroes. Those heroes were in fact thrust into a pocket universe created by Franklin Richards where they were reborn in lives parallel yet different to their own. It was amidst this world's global crisis of Galactus arriving to Earth to consume the planet that Doom and Thor were once more participants in the planet's defense. In this case however, Doom continually traveled back in time to try and avert what seemed to be Earth's inevitable destruction and bore witness to the repeated death of many heroes, Thor among them. When the truth of the 'Heroes Reborn' universe was revealed, it was Doom who piloted the ship which would return the reborn heroes to their proper universe. However Doom became tempted by the potential power that Franklin Richards represented and plotted to kidnap him during the escape from the Heroes Reborn Earth. It was Thor who managed to wring the boy free from Doom's grasp and then pulled Doom into a dimensional tear.

Thor's plan was then interfered with as the two were suddenly pulled into another dimensional event. Doom and Thor were drawn from their dimensional battle and separated on an alien world. While Thor made continual unsuccessful attempts at escaping the planet, Doom conquered the underground population. Eventually Doom drew Thor out into a pitched battle, however it was a necessary ruse in order to defeat their common 'foe,' the witch Ceranda, who was using her mystical powers to keep Thor from leaving. Doom revealed the truth to Thor and then escaped the planet on his own by fatally robbing Ceranda of her own magical power. The dying woman had power enough for one final spell which returned Thor to Asgard without any memory of the events that had transpired. It was her wish that he should not bear the pain of her loss because she had trapped him on the world out of loneliness.

Shortly after Odin's death, Thor ascended to the throne of Asgard to rule as king. During his reign, he became drawn into a conflict in Slokovia where followers of his were brutally murdered. The resultant stand off between Slokovian, Asgard, and UN forces also drew the attention of Doom whose country, Latveria, borders Slokovia. During this crisis, Doom attempted to gain access to a fragment of Thor's power which he had given Iron Man as a gift. The fragment was eventually incorporated into a new suit of armor which Iron Man used in battle against Thor. Doom ultimately manipulated events so that he could annex Slokovia and incorporated it into Latveria. The event also created a rift between Thor and his former teammates, the Avengers. Thor's reign continued to be tumultuous one culminating in Raganrok, a great battle which swept all of Asgard. The battle lit up the sky in all dimensions. While Doom rotted in hell after a recent battle with the Fantastic Four, Doom witnessed the fall of the Asgard and spied something escaping and ripping the very fabric of existence. The object proved to be Thor's hammer, which Doom clung to its wake in order to escape hell. For a time, Doom believed that his witnessing the fall of the Gods and his experience with the Hammer had made him touched by the power of the Asgard. Acting on this intuition, he attacked a military base in Oklahoma, where the Hammer had fallen, and attempted to lift it. To his disappointment, the Hammer reacted but he was unable to pick it up.

Thor eventually returned from the Void of non-existence and began to resurrect other Asgardians whose souls had taken residence in the bodies of mortals. However Thor was careful to choose who to return to life. Loki contacted Doom from the Void and conspired to trick Thor into returning him and other villainous Asgardians to life. Loki returned as a female having secretly taken Lady Sif's body. Loki orchestrated Thor's exile from Asgard making Balder the new king of Asgard. Eventually Loki manipulated Balder into leading his people out of Asgard, permanently hovering over Oklahoma, to take residence in Latveria. In exchange for allowing Asgardian's to live in Latveria, Loki promised Doom the opportunity to experiment on Asgardians in order to discover the source of their power and immortality. Loki also asked Doom to order disguised Doombots to attack and kill Donald Blake, Thor's human host, but they were defeated. Doom's experiments were discovered and Balder led his people on a mission to recover their bodies. To their horror, Doom had reanimated the Asgardians as murderous drones which obeyed his commands. Thor traced the robots which attacked him back to Doom and joined Balder's mission. Doom revealed that he had harnessed the Odinforce from the Asgardians and used it to power his own version of the Destroyer armor. Thor and Doom fought until Thor ripped the armor open. Before he could take his revenge, Doom disappeared. With Doom gone, Balder gathered his people and returned them to Asgard while Thor returned to Oklahoma to continue his exile.
