Lucia von Bardas
First Appearance: Secret War #1
In the aftermath of Doctor Doom's death and the Fantastic Four's brief governship of Latveria, the United Nations helped organize free elections in Latveria, the first in decades. The outcome of the elections was the election of Prime Minister Lucia von Bardas. Though publically she worked hard to mend relations with the United States, behind the scenes Von Bardas' government proved to be just as belligerent as the previous administration. With aid from the criminal technologist the Tinkerer, von Bardas began to arm and fund low level super-villains with high powered armaments. The ultimate objective for supplying these persons was to combine the different armaments into a weapon of mass destruction. The detonation was meant to take place in New York city.
Routine interrogations combined with the Black Widow spotting the Tinkerer flying into Latveria tipped Nick Fury and SHIELD to von Bardas' plot. When Nick Fury brought his findings to the United States government, he was ordered not to act. Fury took it upon himself to form his own strike team to prevent the attack. Gathering a group of heroes, Fury led his team into Latveria where he had Castle Doom leveled to the ground. Von Bardas was in the castle when it was destroyed and was presumed dead. A year later however, each member of Fury's team was savagely attacked. Reunited by these attacks, the team came face to face with Lucia von Bardas who survived as a grotesque cyborg. Using the super-villains she had armed, her plan to destroy New York nearly came to fruition until SHIELD agent Daisy Johnson used her ability to generate powerful vibrations to burst von Bardas' cybernetic power source and killing her.
