Comments:

Galactus finally eats the planet Earth with a little help from Doom's arrogance and greed. Not exactly my characterization. Doom only shows up at the last minute. Not much but it does pack an emotional punch, especially for fans of SHIELD who can read a tender moment between Nick Fury and his long time girlfriend, Val. Bottom Line: Read It!

Title - Shadow's End!

Issue - 12

Writer - Walt Simonson

Art - Michael Ryan / Anthony Winn

Summary:

Doom arrives on board the SHIELD Helicarrier and informs all aboard that Galactus' Heralds are about to arrive. He urges them to attack and destroy them and not allow them to construct the capacitors that Galactus needs in order to feed on the planet. Fury and the Avengers quickly discover that Doom speaks the truth. Fury orders the Avengers, Hulk, and the FF to attack the individual capacitors while he tackles another. The FF succeed in destroying their designated target but fall victim to a nuclear missle launched by Doom as part of his own attempts to "help" in saving Earth. The Avengers and Hulk also succeed in their targets but suffer fatalities. Ultimately it is revealed by the heralds that by successfully destroying the capacitors mankind has proven they are ripe for Galactus to eat. A dying Burce Banner reveals that their only chance is to open a flaw in the space-time fabric in order for it to consume everything, even Galactus. While the Avengers agree that it is better to die while taking Galactus with them, Doom flees into time hoping to try and find another solution. The galaxy meanwhile is destroyed by their actions.

Comments:
Doom gets some good panel time here. This also counts as one of the times in which Doom has killed the FF. It's nice to see Walt Simoson write Doom again. Of course the characterization is consistent with that of the Heroes Reborn Doom. It's interesting to read a crossover which entails watching the same events happen over and over again except a little different. The common thread being Doom surviving each time and thus , ironically providing hope for the future. Still, it's hardly worth getting. This one is only for the die-hard enthusiasts. Bottom Line: Read It!

Comments:

Third time's the charm. Not in this case. Doom's struggle to save the world could have led to some character development and a shrinking of his ego as he realizes that he isn't as smart as he thinks, but unfortunately it doesn't. While much more enjoyable than Part 1, Bottom Line: Skip It!

Title - Let It Be

Issue - 12

Writer - Jeph Loeb

Art - Ed Benes

Summary:

Traveling back in time a fourth time in order to prevent the world's destruction, Doom approaches Rikki Barnes, Bucky, to learn the secret of her existence. Perusing SHIELD files, Doom learned that Bucky should not exist and is in fact a chronal anomaly. Before he can learn more, Captain America arrives. Doom warns him of the planets impending destruction, and the importance that the Fantastic Four not fall in the battle they are currently fighting. Cap quickly gathers the Avengers and pulls the FF from battle. Doom and the rest of the Knights of the Atomic Roundtable gather to come up with a plan to stop Galactus from feeding off planet Earth. While the Knights plan and other heroes wait, Bucky receives a visit from the Silver Surfer. After warning her to tell the others to evacuate as many people off the planet, the Surfer turns to leave. Bucky attempts to bring him back by holding on to his board. Angered by Bucky's actions, Galactus shoots a blast of energy at her which send the young girl falling into the water below. Seeing the result of his actions, the Surfer sides with the humans. The Knights devise the Ultimate Nullifier to defeat Galactus and send the Surfer who dies using the device on his former master. In the aftermath, Bucky is said to be recovering form her wounds, meanwhile Reed offers Doom his hand in friendship. Doom declines stating that where he goes, he goes alone.

Comments:

Of the four parts, this issue is without a doubt the best. Doom actually comes off well here. His efforts do make a difference. He's certainly no hero, but he manages to help save the day. The final moment between Reed and Doom is priceless. Really good stuff which I enjoyed. Bottom Line: *** out of 5
