Summary: This reality diverges from ours when Doom is not expelled from the university. He completes his studies, but continues to blame Richards for the accident which ruined his face. Never making the trip to Tibet, Doom plots his revenge on Reed much sooner. While still attending graduate school, Reed is surprised when Doom seeks lodging at the same boarding house as he. One night, while Reed and Ben are having a night out on the town, Doom sneaks into Reed's room to steal a device he has created to open a dimensional warp. When Reed and Ben return, they decide to track Doom down and recover the device. Together with Sue and Johnny, the four find that Doom is attempting to free his mother from Hades. The forces he unleashes are beyond his control and its up to the four to close the warp before the whole planet is sucked into Hades. The team succeeds in closing the warp, and later Reed also succeeds where Doom failed and frees his mother. Reunited with his mother, Doom and the team part ways.
Comments: McDuffie delivers an excellent 'What If?' His grasp of all the characters is evident throughout even though we're seeing an 'alternate' reality. We lost this man way too soon. |
