Nueva York, in the year 2099. A couple out on the town are looking for a bite to eat. Their date is interrupted when Tania receives an urgent message. Unknown to her date, Tania is the Black Widow. She receives a message to join her fellow Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Hercules, and Hawkeye. The team are after the Chain Gang who have stolen some gems. Black Widow arrives just in time to defeat the last of the gang. She un-sheaths her stinger to feed on the gang member, but Captain America warns her off. Cap also makes Hercules apologize to a woman he was attempting to force himself on. Making him realize that he was behaving like a drunken assaulter of women, Hercules shoves off to be alone. Back at Alchemax, Cap makes a report to the CEO, Miguel Stone. She expresses her concerns about Hercules' drunk behavior, so Miguel agrees to talk to him about it. After being being dismissed, Captain America reverts into Roberta Mendez, in both mind and body, unaware of her alter ego as Captain America. As Roberta, she is married to a writer and has two children. Elsewhere, Sonny Frisco, aka Iron Man, visits the Vision and asks if she sees anything in the team's future. She sees new enemies, who will present themselves as friends. They will call themselves, the Defenders.

She denies any wrong doing and Miguel leaves her with a warning. Shortly after, Miguel assembles the team to go downtown and interrogate Martin Hargood, a downtown gun-runner whose card was found on The Specialist. When Captain America protests Miguel's tactics in trying to force the Defenders to signup with Alchemax, Miguel dismisses her. Unknown to Miguel, the Captain resists the transition back to Roberta and manages to remain as herself. The Captain gathers Hercules and Roman and together they free Silver Surfer and Hulk. After battling Iron Man, the Captain is surprised when her husband, Harry, shows up. Harry uses an override phrase to shut the Captain down. Before she can be apprehended, Strange appears out of nowhere and plucks the Captain to safety. However Strange is startled to find that the Captain has reverted back to Roberta.

Notes:

  • Appearance by Tyler Stone. Tyler references that Miguel took the company away from him. He also appears in a wheelchair, much like he did towards the end of the original series. It is Tyler who takes responsibility for creating the Avengers 2099. Tyler also jokes about killing Miguel's mother. Its left unclear if Conchata is alive or not.

Issue: 5

Writer: Peter David

Art: Will Sliney

Summary:
In freeing the Defenders, Captain American inadvertently frees Martin Hargood, now calling himself Baron Mordo. He breaks into the Virtual Unreality lab and summons The Dweller. Back at the Sanctum Santorum, the Defenders puzzle over what has happened to Captain America. Soon Roberta receives a message from Miguel who uses the code word to transform her back into the Captain. Miguel summons her and the Defenders back Alchemax where The Dweller has materialized on top of the building. Miguel rushes to get his father to a safe room. On the way, Tyler confesses that it was he that hired The Specialist to eliminate Captain America. He knew that one day she would betray Alchemax. Angered that his father would take this action behind his back, Miguel pushes him out the window. Roman joins the battle and brings Giganto, a being as old as The Dweller. Giganto defeats The Dweller physically while Strange manages to cast a spell that banishes The Dweller back into the Virtual Unreality gate. In the aftermath, Miguel agrees to not arrest The Defenders, on the condition that they stay out of their way. The Defenders and The Avengers part company as allies.

Notes:

  • Hercules explains it was Roberta's husband, Harold, that exposed Roberta to the same super-soldier serum that created the original Captain America.
  • The series was collected in TPB in 2015.

Comments:

This short series bridges Volume 2 and Volume 3 of Spider-Man 2099 while the Marvel Universe at large ended and was remade during the Secret Wars mega-event. I felt one of the downsides of this series is we were already dealing with an alternate 2099 before the Secret Wars event came along. So introducing yet another version of 2099 that doesn't line up with the original was....a little bit of overkill. On the plus side, the series brings back some familiar faces while introducing some new ones. It's great to see Strange, Hulk, and Roman back. The nostalgia however is somewhat tempered by the fact that all the characters seem like hollow shells of their past selves. A lot of the new characters suffer from the same. Hawkeye, Vision, and Iron Man really don't get a lot of development. The character to come off best is Captain America 2099. Her dual personality is an intriguing twist. But the fact that we don't get a proper origin here (or subsequently) is disappointing. The covers by Dave Rapoza are another highlight of the series.
