Issue: 1 Writer: Peter David Art: Will Sliney
Summary: Nueva York, in the year 2099. A couple out on the town are looking for a bite to eat. Their date is interrupted when Tania receives an urgent message. Unknown to her date, Tania is the Black Widow. She receives a message to join her fellow Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Hercules, and Hawkeye. The team are after the Chain Gang who have stolen some gems. Black Widow arrives just in time to defeat the last of the gang. She un-sheaths her stinger to feed on the gang member, but Captain America warns her off. Cap also makes Hercules apologize to a woman he was attempting to force himself on. Making him realize that he was behaving like a drunken assaulter of women, Hercules shoves off to be alone. Back at Alchemax, Cap makes a report to the CEO, Miguel Stone. She expresses her concerns about Hercules' drunk behavior, so Miguel agrees to talk to him about it. After being being dismissed, Captain America reverts into Roberta Mendez, in both mind and body, unaware of her alter ego as Captain America. As Roberta, she is married to a writer and has two children. Elsewhere, Sonny Frisco, aka Iron Man, visits the Vision and asks if she sees anything in the team's future. She sees new enemies, who will present themselves as friends. They will call themselves, the Defenders.

Comments: This short series bridges Volume 2 and Volume 3 of Spider-Man 2099 while the Marvel Universe at large ended and was remade during the Secret Wars mega-event. I felt one of the downsides of this series is we were already dealing with an alternate 2099 before the Secret Wars event came along. So introducing yet another version of 2099 that doesn't line up with the original was....a little bit of overkill. On the plus side, the series brings back some familiar faces while introducing some new ones. It's great to see Strange, Hulk, and Roman back. The nostalgia however is somewhat tempered by the fact that all the characters seem like hollow shells of their past selves. A lot of the new characters suffer from the same. Hawkeye, Vision, and Iron Man really don't get a lot of development. The character to come off best is Captain America 2099. Her dual personality is an intriguing twist. But the fact that we don't get a proper origin here (or subsequently) is disappointing. The covers by Dave Rapoza are another highlight of the series.
