Writer: Peter David

Art: Joe St. Pierre

Summary:

Tyler Stone pays a late night visit to Alchemax headquarters to inquire about Kasey Nash's condition. To the surprise of the guard keeping watching on her, he orders that she be released. Elsewhere, Miguel is still dealing with the revelation that Tyler Stone is his father and that the accident which turned him into Spider-Man need never have happened because he was never really addicted to Rapture. Meanwhile, in the free city of Nightshade, Angela Daskalakis is informed that Alchemax has learned of their research and the likelihood that they will send corporate raiders to complete a hostile takeover. Angela inquires about the status of subject 394, Sgt. Estevez. Gene manipulation has transformed him physically as well as increasing his aggressiveness. Angela maintains that should they have to fight off Alchemax's raiders, it will be necessary to set Estevez loose. Elsewhere, Public Eye flyboys drop off Kasey Nash on Gabe's doorstep. Meanwhile, Spider-Man makes a call to the CEO of Stark-Fujiwaka. Hikaru-Sama explains that he empowered Kasey Nash to balance the scales for what he did to the Specialist. He also warns Spider-Man not to call him again. Dana shows up at Miguel's apartment wanting to talk about their relationship. She suspects that Miguel is seeing Xina again. He denies it and in a fit of rage yells at her to leave. Later Miguel drops by to give Xina a thank-you gift for repairing Lyla. She convinces him to join her on a trip to visit Angela.

Title: Behind the Eight Ball

Writer: Terry Kavanagh

Art: Max Douglas

Summary:

Miguel buys a lot of vintage 20th century items on auction as a gift to repay Xina for repairing Lyla. However no sooner does he purchase the lot it is then stolen by the Data Pirate. As Spider-Man, Miguel follows his trail home. Deducing that the Data Pirate's powers are electrical in nature, Spider-Man uses the water from the 20th century eight ball he stole to short him out. The resultant electrical short also reveals that the impoverished family that the Data Pirate was stealing for are nothing more than holograms. After he reclaims the stolen items, Spider-Man swings away reflecting on his own attachment to Lyla.

Notes:

  • The lot Miguel purchases for Xina includes a magic eight ball, snow globe, a comic book, a soda pop bottle, and a toy robot. He apparently doesn't give her any of these items. Ultimately he gives her a gumball machine.

  • Artist Max Douglas has posted the original art for this story on his website. Check it out, also so you can read his recollections about this story.

Placement:

The only time in which this adventure can be slipped into is during #26 as that issue features both Miguel's first encounter with a repaired Lyla and ends with Miguel repaying Xina with a gift. The adventure would seem to take place somewhere in between those two moments, likely after he's thrown Dana out.
