Title: Downtown

Writer: Peter David

Art: Rick Leonardi

Summary:

Downtown, two Watchdogs follow a woman and young daughter as they walk home. While one of them distracts the daughter, the other attempts to rape the mother in an alley. Spider-Man suddenly emerges from below some rubble in the alley. The two Watchdogs try to shoot him, but he manages to defeat them both and take their vehicle. Back at Alchemex, Tyler Stone receives a call from the CEO. The CEO is angry that Stone’s plan failed. Stone had wanted Spider-Man to defeat the Specialist in order to draw Stark-Fujiwaka Corp into a costly vendetta of honor. Flying above Downtown, Kasey searches for Spider-Man but to no avail. Gabe likewise also travels downtown to search for his brother. The Watchdog vehicle takes Spider-Man to a medical clinic where he is treated for his wounds. The Doctor urges him to stay, but he refuses. Waiting for him outside are the Public Eye and Watchdogs. They corner Spider-Man into a dead end. Suddenly the officers are all killed and Spider-Man finds himself being flown away in the grasp of the Vulture.

Notes:

  • First Appearance: This is the first "appearance" of Alchemex's CEO, Avatarr, though he's only a silhouette and unnamed here. He strongly hints that he has encountered the original Spider-Man.

  • First appearance: Vulture 2099.

  • Collected in Spider-Man 2099 Volume 1

Summary:

A still disorientated Spider-Man awakens to find himself in the grip of the Vulture. Pursuing them is Kasey who is trying to free Spider-Man. Vulture is about to deliver a killing blow, but Spider-Man interferes so that Kasey crashes and survives. Gabe’s search for Miguel brings him into contact with a gang of Fenris who attempt to steal his car. He manages to elude them and get one of their guns. Meanwhile, in the Vulture’s lair, Spider-Man escapes his cell and finds himself in Vulture’s throne. The Vulture explains he is the leader of the Freakers, one of a varied number of groups in Downtown. He wishes Spider-Man to join his ranks as he plans to topple Alchemex. He objects to all the Public Eye enforcers that rule the skies above Downtown. When Spider-Man refuses, Vulture tries to have him killed. The two fight and their battle takes them outside into the skies above. Elsewhere, Gabe sits outside what he thinks is Kasey’s apartment. Suddenly she sneaks up on him. Already anxious from his previous encounter with a gang, Gabe shoots her accidentally.
