Title: Time Flies Part 2: So Tonight We're Gonna Party Like it's 2099!

Writer: Peter David

Art: Chris Batista

Summary:

In the corporate HQ of Alchemax, Jordan Boone reports to Tyler Stone that he's pulled what appears to be a Time Platform out of Virtual Unreality (VU). The platform begins to react to some newly arrived chrono-particles. Elsewhere, said particles are Captain Marvel and Starfox. Marvel easily dispatches the Public Eye officers chasing Spider-Man, but he flees while Marvel saves Starfox from plummeting to his death. Back at Alchemax, Thanatos emerges from the VU gate and tells Stone that he wants the Time Platform Boone discovered. Meanwhile, at Starfox's insistence, he and Marvel search for Spider-Man. The trail leads them to Miguel's apartment where after some reluctance, Miguel reveals that he is Spider-Man. Miguel then demans of Starfox to explain what exactly he wants from him. Starfox finally reveals that Thantos used a weapon called the Spear of Destiny on him, and if he does not deliver Marvel to Thantos, he will die.

Notes:

  • This is the only issue of the storyline that takes place entirely in the year 2099 and it reunites Peter David with artist Chris Batista who penciled some of the Young Miguel O'Hara back-up stories.

Title: Time Flies Part 3: Future Shares

Writer: Peter David

Art: Chris Cross

Summary:

Now knowing of Thanatos' involvement, Miguel offers to lead Starfox and Marvel to Alchemax and the VU gate. On the way, they are intercepted by Public Eye officers outfitted in SIEGE armor. Spider-Man and Marvel try to fend them off when suddenly Starfox is enveloped by a time platform. Their battle ends once the SIEGE officers learn that they were headed for Alchemax anyway. Marvel and Spider-Man break into Alchemax in time to see Thanatos break open the VU gate. Thanatos, with Marvel, Spider-Man, and Starfox in tow, enter innerspace. Their journey ends abruptly. Marvel and Spider-Man find themselves in yet another future and face to face with the Maestro version of the Hulk. Meanwhile, Thanatos and Rick enter the memorial that his future self has made with the remains of all past heroes and villains. Rick is horrified to see his elder self. He's even more shocked when Thanatos removes his helmet and reveals himself to be Rick Jones as well. His plan is to reshape the world so he never creates the Hulk and takes over the galaxy during the Kree-Skull War.

Notes:

  • Thanatos explains that the Heroic Age ended because of the Eon War, a massive temporal conflict. No record of the war exists because the war erased itself.

  • Revealed that Thanatos is in fact Rick Jones.

  • Spider-Man 2099 references meeting the original Spider-Man, see Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man.

Creator Comments:

Peter David: "I had several ideas as to who Thanatos could be. And so I couldnt believe it, but years after the book ended, people would ask me about Thanatos! Years after! And I had various ideas about who it could be! But when I was bringing him back in Captain Marvel, Rick Jones seemed like the logical choice. So lo and behold, Rick Jones became Thanatos."

Title: Time Flies Conclusion: Jonesing

Writer: Peter David

Art: Chris Cross

Summary:

Thanatos has Starfox break into Maestro's private quarters to steal the amulet and cloak of Dr. Strange. Meanwhile, Marvel and Spider-Man battle Maestro. Thanatos explains to his other selves that he plans to use the items that he has been collecting to warp reality so that he is the template for all Rick Jones across all universes, he is to be the "Ultimate" Rick Jones. Once he has the amulet and cloak in his possession, Thanatos begins the merging process. However his plan is foiled when the elder Rick Jones summons Thor's hammer. The combined might of the hammer with Marvel's Nega-Bands destroy Thanatos. In the aftermath, Spider-Man is returned home to 2099.

  Placement:
This is probably the hardest story to reconcile with regards to the main title's time-line because of one simple fact....Jordan Boone. If not for his presence, this would fit fine after Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man and before #23. Gabe and Miguel's open talk about his alter ego place this firmly post #22. Miguel's mention of meeting his predecessor places this after that story.
