| Comments: In #258, the masterful John Byrne gives us a rare glimpse of Doom that often goes unseen in the pages of MARVEL. What does Doom do while he's not attacking the FF? Well, he does kingly stuff, takes walks with Kristoff, murders his enemies, and plots to kill the FF. I think that would make a great comic. Doom's demise at the conclusion of the three issues is extraordinarily done here by Byrne. However Byrne's greatest talent, and one scarcely found among today's writers, is his ability to lay the seeds for future stories. Although everything in this issue leads us to believe that Doom is dead for good, long time FF readers might have been able to guess what Doom's final thoughts were alluding to. Nevertheless, this issue marks the end of an era for Doom. Although Byrne would bring Doom back, the events set in motion in later issues would make sure that nothing would ever be the same again. As Doom's deaths go, this ranks as my favorite. Yes, I'd rather have him caught in blast of the power cosmic than that fluff Mark Waid wrote in Authoritative Action. On top of it all, this has one of the all time classic Doom covers. Bottom Line: * * * * * out of 5
