Title - And Now the Endgame Cometh! Issue - 157 Writer - Roy Thomas Art - Rich Buckler & Joe Sinnott
Summary: With the Surfer in his trap, Doom feeds an android of his own design, which he names Doomsman II, the power cosmic. The android is unleashed upon the FF and a battle ensues. In his cell, the Surfer discovers that Helena, the woman he believed to be Shalla Bal, is in fact a look alike forced by Doom to play the part. The Surfer then quickly joins the battle and aids the FF in defeating the Doomsman II. Although his android is defeated, Doom stands ready to battle them all, however Helena pleads with them not fight. Any battle between such evenly matched foes would surely bring the castle down and destroy all the precious artifacts of Latverian history. Doom and the FF agree to cease battle, and each go their separate ways. Doom ultimately feels used himself by an unseen force. Doom is correct as we see in the depths of hell, all was orchestrated by Mephisto to torture the Silver Surfer. He further reveals that Helena is indeed Shalla Bal but that he had clouded her mind to think otherwise.

| Comments: This story falls into the beginning of Doom's Super Villain Team-Up era. With Roy Thomas on board as writer and editor we get some real tight continuity. By tight, I mean packed in. This story references Giant Size Super Villain Team-Up #1 in several ways. First, we are reminded of Doom's fall from space. A frequent occurrence which tempts me to rename this period the "Doom falls from space" period. Second, we have the Doomsman II, an upgrade of the Doomsman I who appears in Astonishing Tales and later Super Villain Team-Up. The story also echoes FF 57-60 when Doom steals the Surfer's power because here he does it again. The Doom characterization is the norm for the classic period. Nothing really stands out other than the odd ending. They stop fighting because the castle is filled with priceless archives and artifacts, with another neat reference to how the castle was destroyed back Astonishing Tales #3. Its an odd reason to stop fighting seeing how in future issues, not much care is paid to state of the castle during fights. On the other hand, for Doom there is a sort of precedent in FF#87 where Doom stops his plans because one of his lackeys almost destroyed a painting. The story is okay, not a must have, but a nice read if you can get it. Bottom Line: * * * out of 5 |
