Summary:

As Namor is tormented by the ancient kings of Atlantis, Doom uses a device of his own making to transport himself Loa, and Abira to hell. The three of them traverse hell and find Namor holding court to dead subjects whom he can no longer help. When Doom sees that Namor refuses to leave, he attacks him and thus forces him to reveal his true nature. In retaliation, the ancient kings attack Abira and leave her in a trance-like state. With escaping hell the only chance for restoring her, Namor leads them to find a way out.

Notes:

  • The way Hell appears depends on one's own mind, however those who have been there before can see beyond its appearance and spot landmarks. Doom has visited hell on many occasions. Notably to save his mother's soul (see Triumph and Torment). He also spent some time imprisoned there after angering the demons Hazzarath (see Authoritative Action and Fantastic Four #536 - 537).

  • Doom mentions that together they have faced monsters, Nazis (Super-Villain Team Up), and Gods (Infinity Gauntlet).

Writer - Stuart Moore

Summary:

Doom leads Namor and the others to what is apparently the exit from hell, but it proves to be an illusion. The group is then surrounded by the ancient kings of Atlantis who attack. Doom takes this opportunity to leave them by other means, but reminds Namor that he is in his debt. Eventually the exit becomes visible when Namor learns that he is not alone and his allies and friends. Later, after they have returned to New Atlantis, Abira tells Namor that Doom was not well since at first he seemed not to remember how to operate the device to enter Hell. Elsewhere, Doom gives Madame Oudvrou a gift for information regarding Namor.

  Comments:
A short but strong appearance. Stuart Moore seamlessly weaves this tale of science, sorcery, hell, and Doom! Its a fine treat to see the Namor and Doom characters written so well together. I admit my favorite part is when Namor tells Doom "Back to Back Victor, just like we did it on Hydrobase." Its a shame Doom doesn't join in the final battle, but the reason becomes apparent at the end. Moore demonstrates again a strong familiarity with Doom's history and the character. See New Avengers / Transformers 1- 4 for another well written Doom appearance.
Bottom Line: **** out of 5
